Does anyone know any good places / routes to camp in the cumbrian lake district or recommend any guides / books etc..

Borrowdale near keswick is a nice area to walk and camp with lakes closeby too. I doubt you'd get lost very easily – you're never that far from a road or house. Tourist information in any of the towns will have loads of guides and maps etc.
What exactly are you looking for from your trip and what time of year are you going?
well I would recommend getting a recreational GPs like the 1 I have the Etrex Legend HCx
Otherwise you could find yourself lost.
Dont expect your mobile phone to have a signal much
