The Viewranger software was mentioned in the GPS software for mobile phones post. However, I thought it best to give some more information as I have received some questions via my contact page. To begin with the Viewranger software will not give you turn by turn navigation to get you from one point to another. What it does give you is a fantastic solution for people that want to pinpoint their location, go walking and have a contingency plan to ensure that they can find their way home! As previously mentioned the software is designed to work with Nokia, Samsung and other handsets that use the Symbian S60 platform, and there's a wide selection off maps to choose from. Viewranger will use the mobile phones GPS system, it will then find and display a map of your location. When I tried this software I found my location within 45 seconds the longest it took was 1 ½ minutes. Once the location has been pinpointed the system goes on-line and brings up a number off very interesting routes. The routes themselves can then be downloaded in exchange for credits it's best to check the Viewranger website for current prices, the last time I used this I bought 10 downloads for 15 pounds which I think is a bargain. To use the software I recommend that you can read maps because as mentioned the software does not provide turn by turn navigation. It does however provide photos of the area and written directions and interesting notes when you download the routes.
