Walking Clothes – What to Wear

Whether you're planning a short ramble to the nearest pub, or a 16-mile uphill hike, here is a basic list for all you need for a comfortable walk. These are the items that you will need to take with you, obviously the amount depends on the time of year and type of walk. I suggest that you buy all your items before you arrive so you don't spend time shopping when you could be walking the fells!

Sun Hat / Hat for cold, rain and wind.
For sunny days, for cold days and for windy days. If heading for the heights I always carry a balaclava to shelter my face and more importantly (because they stick out and are large) my ears.

Sweatshirt / T-shirt / long sleeve shirt
Choose ones made from cotton or a smiler material.

Fleece
Even in summer the weather can change quickly and at high altitudes it can get very cold.

Walking Trousers
As mentioned before do not wear Denim Jeans as they retain water making them cold and heavy

Socks
Choose walking socks.

Walking Boots
There are several choices: Materials normally Leather or fabric. Leather ones are more robust but are heaver. Waterproof boots are better even if you only intend to walk on dry days, as you may come across streams or bogs. Tip take spare laces.

Waterproof's including over trousers
For summer you only need lightweight materials. For Spring,Autumn choose a Gore-Tex type or similar material. If looking for Over-trousers make sure you can get them off and on without taking your boots off, so look for ones with zips or elastic.
